An abandoned hair salon close to one of Bolton town centre’s biggest development sites could be set to be revived as a laundrette and flats.

The brick and tile-built building on Bank Street is currently vacant across the ground floor, basement and upper floors, having most recently been home to a hairdresser.

But the building lies close to the Church Warf site, set to be one of the town centre’s biggest developments, and could soon be transformed into a new laundrette business.

Cllr Richard Silvester, of Queens Park and Central, said: “I believe that this proposal is a good use of a vacant building in Bolton town centre on Bank Street, which is close to the Church Wharf development area.

“The proposal will bring back a business use on the ground floor of the building bringing economic activity and a service to the town centre, which both residents in the town centre and those coming into the town centre can use.

“The two upper floors would also benefit from self-contained flats which again is a good use of this floor space and will bring residents into the town centre.”

Cllr Silvester said he was happy to support the proposal in his capacity as the area’s representative on Bolton Council.

The plan will be made up of two commercial spaces, including the laundrette, on the ground floor and basement, with two “self-contained” flats on the upper floors.

The Church Wharf site, alongside the River Croal not far from Bank Street, is now set to include a120 bedroom hotel and more than 400 homes.

Just last week Bolton Council agreed to a “provisional land sale” which they hope will allow works to get underway.

The council has not yet agreed to a final figure for the land before it is sold to developers Watson Homes.

Cllr Silvester says he hopes that proposals like reviving the vacant building on Bark Street will help add to the new economic activity coming into the town.

The proposal was put before Bolton Council on Thursday March 14.

The authority will aim to decide whether or not to approve the plans by Thursday May 9 this year.
