Frank Rothwell has officially completed his mammoth 3,000-mile row across the Atlantic to raise money for charity and set a new world record in the process.

The Oldham Athletic chairman has been rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean since December 13 in an effort to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's Research UK.

So far, Frank - who raised £1.1million in his first solo Atlantic mission - has raised just over £253,000.

He reached the finish in Antigua just after 5.30pm UK time today (February 15), a day behind schedule of his previous target of making Valentine's Day for a reunion with his wife Judith.

His return to dry land after 64 days was livestreamed on the World's Toughest Row Youtube page which is behind the endurance race which see people from across the globe gather annually "to test themselves against Mother Nature" and compete to row across the Atlantic ocean.

As well as raising thousands for charity Frank also set a new world record as the oldest person, at 73, to row across any ocean solo.

The Oldham Times:

Speaking after finishing he said: "When you changed the name of the race to the World's Toughest Row I thought the name was wrong. It is wrong, it should be the Word's Toughest Anything.

"There's nothing that could be harder than that. That is the ultimate, ultimate, ultimate.

"You get every emotion you could imagine."

He said it had been "twice as hard" as last time, adding: "I had a faster boat, I thought I was going to be able to do it in 49 days. I'd done all the training and everything and I was going to smash it.

"Woah. You can't do it when the wind's blowing wrong. It's hard work."
