The £50m redevelopment of Stretford town centre now officially includes the retention of its Aldi store in its current form.

Applicant, property company Bruntwood, had initially planned the store at Stretford Mall would be demolished along with other buildings on the site.

Work on reshaping the mall is currently underway in a scheme which will eventually see 800 new homes and 140,000 sq ft of shops, bars, restaurants, a cinema, theatre and a pub take shape.

Bruntwood has now put forward an amended planning application which advocates the ‘retention of Aldi in its current form’.

The company has also reduced the eventual height of the buildings to the north and west of the site, but increased the height of those at the centre of the development from eight to 10 storeys on one plot and 12 storeys on another.

The amended application includes the creation of a ‘retail loop’ for the convenience of residents on the new development.

Meanwhile, plans for the green space have been altered to allow ‘better connectivity’ to the site and allow views of the nearby St Matthews Church.

A covering letter to Trafford council’s planners says: “These amendments do not change the overall amount of development which was previously consented [in April 2023].”
