In a world full of large chains and the recession of independent shops on the high street, Aquila stands as a prime example of the beauty of smaller places still to discover in your local area.

Aquila is a small restaurant, just off the high street of Macclesfield, which serves tapas-style dishes alongside drinks and desserts. Inside is an intimate feel with around 5 tables and welcoming staff matched with tasteful decor and great food.

According to the ‘UK Eating Out Review Market Report 2023’, though the UK eating out market has an estimated value of £70 billion in 2022, and with a forecast of growth to £90 billion in 2027, the cost of living crisis is predicted to significantly restrict the growth of dining out. This will affect small businesses such as Aquila far more than the bigger franchises with larger reaches such as Pizza Express or TGI Fridays covered in the report. Therefore, it is the duty of the consumer to actively choose to keep the independent restaurants in their community going.

Researching for this article was a delicious excuse to sit inside this beautiful restaurant and enjoy a great meal. The menu and specials board cover a wide range of dishes that all came quickly, after being prepared in the kitchen that could be heard behind the bar which added nicely to the intimate dining experience. Following the menu's recommendation of 2-3 dishes per person, the personal favourites of the night were the Patatas Bravas for their presentation and ‘Mike’s famous salt and pepper sausage’ for taste, living up to the title of ‘famous’. The staff were personable and attentive creating a warm atmosphere and allowing for a relaxing meal despite its size. Aquila is a hidden gem of the area that should be put on the map for anybody wanting a nice end to a day out in Macclesfield.
