No new graves are to be available at Urmston Cemetery from as early as next month according to Trafford Council.

The council revealed the site on Queens Road is almost at capacity when it released a short statement this week.

Opened in the 1890s, Urmston Cemetery is one of two cemeteries in the north of the borough alongside Stretford Cemetery. The site on Lime Road is also at capacity as of last year.

No new graves are to be available from as early as next month which means all burial space is to be in the south of the borough unless an alternative is found in the form of burial chambers on some of the land at the rear of the site on Queens Road.

Cath Hynes, the deputy leader of Trafford Council and the executive member with responsibility for for bereavement services, said there is enough burial space for the next 15 to 20 years, most of which is understood to be at Dunham Lawn.

Cllr Hynes said: "It is important we support bereaved families, particularly at their time of grief, and I would like to reassure residents we have enough burial space for at least the next 15 to 20 years.

"However, we also appreciate the needs of bereaved families to visit their loved ones locally if possible and that's why for Urmston Cemetery we will see if burial chambers could be used to allow burials to continue there for the next few years."
