The Labour Group continued its dominance of Trafford Council with a win in a by-election for Bucklow St Martins Ward.

Frances Cosby takes over from Adele New who resigned from the council on September 20 after "a change in priorities".

Cllr Cosby was anticipated to see off the challenge of four other candidates in Bucklow St Martins Ward, an area covering Carrington, Partington and some of Sale, which is a safe seat for the Labour Group since its creation in 2004.

It went according to the script when the result was announced at the town hall last week as she received 794 votes (62.0 per cent).

Cllr Cosby, a University of Manchester alumna who moved to the area around two years ago, said: "I am delighted with the result.

"It is an honour to serve the constituents of Bucklow St Martins and I want to thank them for putting their trust in me."

Tom Ross, the leader of Trafford Council, said: "We are looking forward to [Cllr Cosby] joining the Labour Group. She's got a lot to offer to the Labour Group and, most importantly, to the residents of Carrington, Partington and Sale.

"This a busy, busy ward. There are a lot of things going on and I know Fran is the right one to take on the challenge."

The Conservative Group candidate Paul Lally (284 votes, 22.2 per cent) was the runner-up while the Green Group candidate Rodrigo Capucho Paulo (80 votes, 6.2 per cent) and the Liberal Democrats candidate Matthew Sellars (36 votes, 2.8 per cent) lost out to Reform UK's Paul Swansborough (82 votes, 6.4 per cent).

The Labour Group continued its dominance of Trafford Council as it remained by far the biggest group at the town hall.

Mr Lally said: "Firstly, I would like to thank the residents who took the time to vote for me at the election. I was pleased my campaign produced an increase in the share of the vote from the last election and it is evident the residents are tiring of the Labour Group's complacency and decision-making.

"Finally, I would like to congratulate [Cllr Cosby] and I wish her well in representing the people of Carrington, Partington and Sale."

The result:

Conservative - Paul Lally - 284
Green - Rodrigo Capucho Paulo - 80
Labour - Frances Cosby - 794
Liberal Democrats - Matthew Sellars - 36
Reform UK - Paul Swansborough - 82
