The Trafford Centre revealed the amazing amount it has raised from the coins thrown into its famous fountains since it opened a quarter of a century ago.

The shopping centre in Trafford Park said it cleans off and dries off the currency before donating it to the charities of its choice through its Fountain Fund.

On Monday, as it announced the charities of its choice for this year, it revealed it has raised a total of more than £1.2 million from the coins thrown into its famous fountains since it opened in 1998. This is an average of around £48,000 per year or almost £1,000 per week.

The three organisations are cancer charity Look Good Feel Better, food charity FareShare Greater Manchester and learning disability charity Stockdales.

Simon Layton, centre director at Trafford Centre, said: "Trafford Centre is a part of the community and we are passionate about supporting local charities and local causes.

"Our three new charity partners are very worthy recipients of our Fountain Fund scheme and we are looking forward to developing long-term relationships with their teams."
