The candidates are confirmed in the by-election for Bucklow St Martins Ward with a date set for next month.

The by-election is a result of the resignation of Adele New from Trafford Council after "a change in priorities".

Recently, Cllr New was re-elected as a member for the ward, an area covering Carrington and Partington and including part of Sale. She received the most votes out of her and colleagues Aidan Williams and James Wright allowing her a four-year term until re-election.

However, in a post on social media last month, she revealed her resignation from Trafford Council after "a change in priorities" and with immediate effect.

She said: "After much deliberation I made the decision to stand down as a councillor yesterday (September 20). My resignation is with immediate effect.

"Over the summer months my priorities have changed and I have enjoyed time I have spent with my family on evenings and weekends instead of rushing off to meetings, casework, campaigning, community work and other demands upon my time in addition to working."

The candidates are confirmed as Frances Cosby (Labour), Matthew Sellars (Lib Dem), Paul Lally (Conservative), Paul Swansborough (Reform UK) and Rodrigo Capucho Paulo (Green). Ms Cosby must be considered the favourite in what is a safe seat for the Labour Group since Bucklow St Martins Ward was created in 2004.

The by-election is on November 2 with the count a day afterwards.

Sara Todd, the council's chief executive and returning officer, said: "What we do as a council makes a difference to people's lives so it is important for people to have a say.

"It only takes five minutes to register to vote so please check you can vote and please go and vote. It will make sure you have a say in all the local issues which affect you."

All voters need to be registered and to be in possession of a Voter ID as per the rules introduced this year.
