A six-year-old boy from Partington is looking to climb Ben Nevis in order to raise funds to help children in his local community.

Torsten Gill will climb the UK's highest mountain on Friday, August 25, to raise funds for The Hideaway play centre in Partington Shopping Centre.

The money raised will be spent on Christmas food hampers and toys for local children.

Despite his young age, Torsten has a history of taking on major peaks for good causes.

When he was four, he successfully climbed Snowdon, raising money for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Torsten has also taken part in a roly-poly challenge and the Junior & Mini Great Manchester Run for charitable causes.

Andrew Western, the MP for Stretford and Urmston, said: “Climbing Ben Nevis is no small feat and it’s amazing that Torsten has decided to take on this challenge to help other children in the community.

“Christmas will undoubtedly be a tough time for many and the money Torsten raises will make a huge difference to families in our area.”

Torsten has been visiting The Hideaway since he was a baby and when he decided to climb Ben Nevis, his mother, Natasha, helped him write a letter to The Hideaway, asking if he could fundraise for them.

Natasha said: “I’m so proud of Torsten wanting to actively make positive changes for others. It’s inspiring to see that the small ideas we discuss at home, when we work together, can make a big impact in the wider community. He’s already thinking of his next challenge!”

In 2022, The Hideaway helped 203 households at Christmastime alone. A total of £7,105 was spent on Christmas food hampers and £7,360 was spend on toys.

So far, Torsten is only £100 away from his fundraising target of £1,500.
