Two police officers were attacked with a knife after a police pursuit between Old Trafford and Whalley Range.

The police officers were on patrol at around 4pm on Wednesday when they spotted a moped driving 'erratically'.

The moped made off from the scene but after a police pursuit it was stopped on Wood Road, Whalley Range, where it was involved in a crash. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

However, while the police officers responded to the first incident they were attacked with a knife. Their injuries are not thought to be life-changing or life-threatening.

A 26-year-old man, who is not thought to be connected to the first incident, was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He was taken to hospital before he was taken to custody as he was Tasered at the time of the arrest.

GMP's Superintendent Cara Charlesworth said: "This was a serious assault on two officers who were doing their jobs and trying to keep members of the public safe.

"Thankfully the injuries inflicted on our officers are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening and I commend them for their bravery in bringing the incident to a safe and swift conclusion without risk to the public. One required hospital treatment and we wish him a speedy recovery.

"I can assure you we are treating this incident with due severity and whilst I am pleased we have a man in custody, this investigation is in its early days and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances.

"I urge anyone with information about this incident to contact police as soon as possible."
