The Post Office is set to remain at Stretford Mall in spite of the closure of its current site at the shopping centre.

The current site in WHSmith closes this week with residents in its surroundings worried about a loss of service.

On March 10, the developer responsible for the redevelopment of the Stretford Mall said it was in talks with postmasters to retain the service.

The Post Office is set to remain at the shopping centre with the location of an alternative site announced on June 16.

At the end of this month, a branch will open on a short-term basis on Broady Street, opposite Boots the Chemist and next to Pound Bakery.

At the end of this summer, a branch will open on a long-term basis on Chester Road, next to The Hive. The new postmaster is Arif Matadar who manages a number of other sites all over Greater Manchester.

Mr Matadar said: "I am delighted to be the new postmaster and I look forward to supporting the local community and becoming an important part of day to day life here in the area.

"Myself and my team have plenty of experience in running such a vital service and we can’t wait to meet everyone and to be part of such a thriving area."

Gareth Wilkins, retail manager at Stretford Mall, added: "We have been working with the Post Office for some time to ensure there is a facility in the town for the local community.

"We are delighted that they have appointed a new postmaster and that a new permanent site has been secured on Chester Road which opens late summer.

"We understand how important it is for the community and so we have set up a home for the Post Office within Stretford Mall, which will open within the month and will provide a core service for the community in the interim before the new permanent site opens late summer.

"We are waiting to hear from the Post Office about an opening date and as soon as we know we will update the local community."

Between the closure of the current site in WHSmith and the alternative site on Broady Street, there is a Post Office available in Chorlton, Manchester, on Wilbraham Road.

It is a short walk from the closest bus stop and from Chorlton Metrolink.
