Around 720 homes are on their way to the area around the town hall after two schemes were approved by Trafford Council.

The plans for sites off Talbot Road and Warwick Road were considered by the planning committee when it met this week.

First, around 640 homes were considered for a development next to Old Trafford cricket stadium, the area once occupied by Kellogg's and now occupied by UA92.

These one, two, three and four-bedroom properties are set to be delivered by Glenbrook Property.

Then, around 80 homes were considered for the development opposite Old Trafford tram station, an area now occupied by commercial properties.

These one and two-bedroom properties are set to be delivered by Southway Housing, all 80 of them on what is described as an affordable basis.

The plan for the site off Talbot Road received no representations from residents, but the plan for the site off Warwick Road received representations from more than a dozen residents. These included the members of the Old Trafford Amateur Gardeners Society (OTAGS), who expressed concern about the impact on their allotments.

Both plans were approved by the planning committee when it met this week.

On the development off Talbot Road, Liz Patel, the council's executive member for economy and regeneration, said: "We are delivering on our promises to transform Trafford and I am proud of the progress we have made.

"Thank you to everyone who has made this project a reality. I cannot wait for it to be completed."

On the development off Warwick Road, James Wright, the council's executive member for housing and advice, said: "I am delighted this scheme was given the go ahead by the committee. Here in Trafford – like the rest of the UK – we have a shortage of housing, particularly affordable, quality housing.

"This development will help hundreds of people onto the housing ladder and into good quality apartments in an excellent location. Thank you to everyone who has worked on this project."
