A crackdown has been launched on drivers misusing the disabled blue badge with a special 'day of action'.

Blue badges allow drivers carrying people who have certain severe disabilities to park near shops, stations and other facilities.

However, Trafford Council said fraudsters regularly misuse the badge and the parking concession illegally.

Now, the Council will join other councils across the country by participating in a 'blue badge day of action' on Friday (May 26).

The action will see officers carrying out spot checks on cars and inspecting blue badges.

Those caught abusing the privilege could be hit with a hefty £1,000 parking fine - and could even be prosecuted and taken to court for the criminal offence.

Councillor Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s executive member for highways, environmental and traded services, said: “The misuse of the blue badge is an act of fraud and will not be tolerated.

"We will continue to tackle this misuse on behalf of genuine users who desperately need those spaces to live their lives.

"Make no mistake, we will seek to prosecute those who continue to use the blue badge illegally.”
