The MP for Stretford and Urmston welcomed the news TransPennine Express is to be nationalised after months and months of cancellations and delays.

The company, which is responsible for around half the services through Urmston Station, is to be operated by an Operator of Last Resort from May 28.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the decision was no "silver bullet", in particular in light of strikes, but he suggested it was a chance "to reset the relationship" between the company, its passengers, its workers and the unions.

There is no change to tickets or timetables as a result.

Mr Harper said: "In my time as Transport Secretary, I've been clear that passenger experience must always come first.

"After months of commuters bearing the brunt of continuous cancellations, I’ve made the decision to bring TransPennine into Operator of Last Resort."

Messenger Newspapers: The MP for Stretford and Urmston

After MP for Stretford and Urmston Andrew Western was elected on December 16, one of his first acts was to call for action on TransPennine Express.

He asked leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt: "The dismal performance of TransPennine is a cause of considerable consternation, not only in this place but among many of my constituents who use Urmston Station, where 50 per cent of stopping services are operated by TransPennine. What this means in practice is some 50 per cent of services are subject to near constant cancellations or delays.

"What more does [Ms Mordaunt] believe her government will do to hold TransPennine to account, and, specifically, will she agree to a debate in government time on this sustained underperformance and the misery it is wreaking on my constituents and commuters across the north of England and Scotland?"

He welcomed the news in a post on social media after the announcement this week, but said there is still work to do to fix the rail system as a whole.

Mr Western said: "One of my first acts in Parliament was to raise the dismal performance of TransPennine in Urmston.

"Today’s decision on its future is long overdue.

"Our rail system is broken and only Labour has a plan to fix it."
