An Urmston fishmonger's of five years is to close its doors for the last time this weekend.

Hayley Taylor, owner of What's the Catch, spent this time trying 'to take the fear out of the fish' for customers.

After a successful start to life for the fishmonger's on Station Road, a combination of Brexit, Covid and the cost of living crisis saw a rise in the price of its products of up to 60 per cent, as well as in the price of its utilities.

This was accompanied by a fall in footfall of up to 75 per cent as customers felt the impact of these issues too.

Hayley is to close its doors for the last time this weekend.

She told The Messenger: "It doesn't add up. If a small business gets a big bill, that is it.

"We don't have the reserves. We live week to week.

"I feel emotional. It is where I have been every day.

"This is such an important part of my life."

Although it is the end for the bricks and mortar business, What's the Catch is set to continue as an online business.

Hayley, who worked in mental health until five years ago, is set to do deliveries and videos on social media as she maintains a mission to make fish seem accessible to all.

She said: "People seem to struggle with fish.

"It scares them to death, so what I have tried to do is to take the fear out of the fish."

Hayley sent a message to those who want to support her and others, a lot of whom are in the same position as she is.

She said: "This is the tip of the iceberg. All of the small independents are struggling.

"Customers need to be aware there is no need to spend a lot. You don't need to go in and spend 50 quid. If 30 people come through the door and spend a fiver, that's enough."
