Millions of pounds are set to be spent on roads in Trafford over the next five years.

The council's executive will be asked to approve improvements to roads and bridges under the Key Route Network (KRN) highways capital works scheme when it meets on Monday.

Some £2.5 million will be spent mainly on resurfacing. This includes a section of Stretford Road; Shaftesbury Avenue from Stockport Road to Brooklands Road; Manchester Road from Woodlands Road to Washway Road; Washway Road/Cross Street from Manchester Road to Stretford Road and Centenary Way from Park Way to the Salford boundary.

Structural works will cost £4.5 million and include improvements to Barton Dock Road Bridge, Trafford Moss Canal Bridge, both on Park Way, Ashton Bridge, on Carrington Lane, Crossford New Bridge and Crossford Old Bridge, both on Chester Road, and Edge Lane Canal old and new bridges in Stretford.

The KRN makes up nearly 400 miles of Greater Manchester’s busiest roads which are managed and maintained in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester and funded centrally to support the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, the council's executive member for environmental services, said: “We are committed to improving highways across the borough for all road users – and that includes drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Highways safety is high up on our list of priorities and commitments as is ensuring the safety of bridges.”

The work, if approved, will be carried out over the next five years. The proposed works are in addition to Trafford Council’s highways improvement programme which is due to be announced later this month.
