A CYCLIST is set to take on a mammoth 1,600-mile challenge from Altrincham to the south of Spain in memory of his late mother.

Jonathan Mawby hopes to raise £10,000 for Myeloma UK, a charity dedicated to the illness Lee Mawby had when she died in 2020.

Lee, who with husband Mike ran several pubs across the north west over the years, did not die of the illness itself in the end.

She fell ill during treatment and died of multiple organ failure due to malnutrition after she went more than two weeks without food.

Jonathan, a father-of-two from Timperley, wants to turn the tragedy into a positive if at all possible.

The 44-year-old garage owner said: "I’ve never done something this mad before. The timing seemed right to do something in her honour.

"It’s been timed to the second, so if we get a mechanical bike failure, we will just have to get moving and to get on with it.

"My mum would probably think I’m completely mad. She would probably say, ‘Why on Earth would you want to do that?’

"I will get there, whether it’s on one wheel or two. I hope it’s on two.”

Over the course of 20 days, starting in mid-May, Jonathan will take on tough terrain and climb the equivalent of two Mount Everests.

His father Mike and sister Sally will drive alongside him all the way.

The finish line, Aguilas in the south of Spain, is close to the family’s heart as one of Lee and Mike’s holiday destinations.

Jonathan said: “Any donations will be greatly appreciated. There are many long, cold and wet nights, mornings and weekends ahead of me – and that's just the training – and knowing we're raising money in memory of my mum will spur me on."
