People from across the UK have been doing the most inspiring things to show solidarity and support for those suffering as a result of the invasion of Ukraine - these acts have inspired newspapers and websites from across Newsquest Media Group to come together to raise much-needed funds.

TRAFFORD came together over the weekend to raise funds for refugees from Ukraine.

Fundraisers organised by Sale's Stanley Square and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) saw residents of the borough and beyond donate tens of thousands of pounds to different charitable causes.

At Stanley Square on Saturday, attractions included an art wall, a raffle, performances and pop-up shops.

Some businesses donated some of their sales on the day, and other businesses donated prizes to the raffle.

A total of more than £2,700 was raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, according to a post on social media, as well as significant donations of toiletries to be transported to those in need.

Messenger Newspapers:

The post said: "Thank you – a true community spirit was shown and we're blown away by Sale's generosity."

Then on Sunday, at Sale Fire Station and also in Trafford Park, firefighters, other fire service staff and volunteers cleaned cars between 10am and 4pm in return for donations to UK-Med, a Greater Manchester-based charity with an appeal to help refugees from Ukraine which is backed by Andy Burnham.

The car washes were two of around 30 across the region over the weekend, which raised more than £32,000.

Dave Russel, chief fire officer at GMFRS, said: "I’m incredibly proud of the hard work of all our firefighters, support staff and volunteers over the weekend. Together we washed thousands of cars and raised thousands of pounds to go towards vital supplies.

"I'd like to thank everyone who came along to the car washes – whether it be to wash cars, to bring food supplies for our staff, or to have a vehicle washed for a donation – we are overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the people of Greater Manchester.”
