POLICE are warning residents of offenders who are not breaking into homes, but tricking their way into them.
This warning comes after an incident in Trafford, where £3,000-worth of jewellery was taken from an address by a man hired as a decorator.
The victim hired the man as a decorator after they had seen a recommendation for his services on social media.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), offenders might also imitate salespeople, tradespeople, or someone from a utility company.
They are reminding residents to take steps to protect themselves, including locking their doors, asking for identification before letting anyone in, and taking several recommendations for tradespeople before settling on one.
Detective Chief Inspector Joe Harrop, of GMP’s Economic and Cyber Crime Unit, said: "Most people who call at your home are genuine, however it’s important to remain vigilant and not feel pressured when answering the door to someone you don’t know.
"It’s also important when hiring tradespeople to take several recommendations from people you trust or to get references from past customers. Remember – if in doubt, keep them out."
Anyone with suspicions is asked to contact police on 101, or to use the LiveChat on gmp.police.uk. In an emergency, contact police on 999.
