The M6 was shut in both directions after a woman fell from a bridge.

Police said the carriageway was closed at junction 26 so an air ambulance could land earlier this afternoon.

All lanes have been reopened in both directions between junctions 23 at Haydock and 26 at Orrell with delays of up to 15 minutes.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly after 1.15pm this afternoon (Monday, November 22) police were called to a report of a woman falling from a bridge between junction 25 and 24 of the M6.

"Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time is also asked to get in contact with police.
