Plans to revamp 1960s housing blocks in Altrincham have been revealed.

Homes at Albert, Chapel and Lloyd Courts on New Street – managed by Trafford Housing Trust – are set for a change.

Three years ago, plans were on the table to improve the buildings with areas of focus to include roofs, windows, doors, balconies and guttering and communal areas.

In documents sent to residents of the courts at the time, Trafford Housing Trust said: “These blocks were built in 1960 and need substantial physical investment to address structural issues.

“Investment is needed to the communal entrances and internal areas.

"These blocks have become difficult to let and customers choose to move away from these blocks more frequently than other THT homes, despite their popular location, which suggests that these blocks are no longer popular places to live.

“There is a need to provide better quality affordable homes in Altrincham and across Trafford, and we want to ensure that we offer customers greater choice. We want to explore with you the issues and opportunities for investment into the blocks at New Street.

"We are therefore holding a series of sessions to explore this in more detail with the aim of planning the future of the blocks later in the year.”

Now, residents are being consulted again on what they want to see happen to the buildings.

With discussions in the earliest of stages, improvements to the buildings aren't off the table, but there is also the possibility the buildings could be knocked down and new, energy efficient, high-quality homes built in their place; providing greater housing choices for all age groups and mix of housing type and tenure.

A public consultation drop-in event to discuss possibilities for the regeneration programme will take place at Altrincham Town Hall on November 8 from 5pm until 7pm, and will allow visitors to consider proposals to provide better quality homes on the site.

People living in the courts were consulted yesterday (Monday November 1) on their thoughts about the plans after Trafford Housing Trust customers and leaseholders were originally consulted in 2018 alongside local councillors.

Then, the overriding view was that considerable investment was needed to deal with structural issues in the buildings, and there was a real need for better quality accommodation.

This latest consultation will allow visitors to comment on the emerging plans.

The plans are in their infancy, so exactly how the homes will look has not yet been decided.

Larry Gold, chief executive of Trafford Housing Trust, said: “We are at the very early stages of this project, and no decisions have been made yet on the future of these properties, so we wanted to gauge public opinion from the outset.

"Once we have gathered opinions, we will feed back to our colleagues internally before a further consultation on our revised plans will take place.

“The New Street development is a vital part of the regeneration of Altrincham town centre and plays a key role in upgrading the quality and choice of affordable housing in the area, so it is essential we gather all viewpoints before progressing our plans.”

After this initial November consultation there will another opportunity to see how plans are progressing at a second consultation session, which will take place later this year.
