A SECTION of Stretford's controversial cycle lanes is to be removed due to 'safety concerns'.

The cycle lanes were installed in the form of traffic cones on Bridgewater Way, Chester Road and Edge Lane during lockdown in 2020.

They were installed to promote active travel and social distancing, but residents have complained of issues like congestion or pollution.

One particular issue was on Edge Lane, where the loss of a lane saw traffic spill out onto Chester Road, bringing the junction to a standstill.

But this section of the cycle lanes is to be removed up to Kings Road due to 'safety concerns'.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s executive member for environmental and regulatory services, said: "Trafford Council is removing this small section of the cycle lane following safety concerns.

"Vehicles turning into Edge Lane find themselves blocking the junction, giving rise to safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

"We will of course look at the feasibility of reintroducing this section of cycle lane more safely in the future."

The council's decision comes ahead of a consultation on the future of the cycle lanes on Bridgewater Way, Chester Road and Edge Lane, which is set to start on November 4 and to last for six weeks.

The consultation is not a referendum, but the council is reassuring residents their views will be taken into consideration.

More information on the consultation is still to come.
