Rovers will hope the victory over Reading won’t come at a cost with Daniel Ayala and Ryan Nyambe limping out of the 2-0 win.

Ayala had played every minute until limping off with a calf problem before the break, while Nyambe’s hamstring continues to be a concern as he was forced off on the hour mark.

Goals from Sam Gallagher and Tyrhys Dolan soon after helped Rovers to all three points, their fifth victory of the season, and first in five games.

Thomas Kaminski kept a third clean sheet of the season, on his birthday, with Rovers forced into changes in defence with Harry Pickering already out with a calf problem.

After losing Nyambe and Ayala to injury John Buckley moved to right back, with Jan Paul van Hecke, dropped to the bench as Tony Mowbray made four changes from the QPR defeat, came on to partner Darragh Lenihan.

On the injury to Ayala, Mowbray said: “Ayala has been really good for us this year, I said to him after the half time he’s mature, and I asked him when he’d been feeling his calf and he said he had for a week or two.

“I would prefer, because I have tough calls like telling Jan Paul van Hecke he’s not playing when he’s done well for us in a back three, but playing against this team to play a four and have more players in the forward areas rather than playing three at the back.

“If I knew Daniel had been struggling with his calf then I’d have pulled him in and told him to give it a week of rest and be ready for next week, because I think Jan Paul is made of the right stuff. I see warrior traits in him, he wants to win headers, tackle people, put his body in the way.

“I think he’s a young man doing well for us. The lads were having some fun with him after the game, it was harder to miss than score for him.

“We’re disappointed for Daniel, we’ll see what comes of a scan which he will probably have on Monday and see what the damage is.”

Joe Rankin-Costello is still working his way to full fitness, with Rovers hoping he will come through an hour for the Under-23s in their game with Liverpool on Monday, while they will assess the injury to Nyambe ahead of next weekend’s trip to Derby County.

“Ryan is a phenomenon. If you look at the physical data of Ryan Nyambe it’s way above everyone else for high intensity running, sprints, distance covered, he’s an amazing athlete,” Mowbray added.

“Yet I go back to the league we’re playing, we’re asking him to play three times a week at 12,500 metres and 1,000 high speed running, is it any surprise?

“We’re desperately waiting for Rankin-Costello to get himself back and right up to speed. Hopefully he’ll get 60 or 70 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday.

“Hopefully Ryan has just felt cramp rather than a damaged hamstring. We’ll wait to see what that damage is.”
