A BOMB squad rushed to Sale this afternoon after officers investigating a report of bones stumbled upon a suspected grenade.

At around 11.30am, police received a report of bones found at a building on Tatton Road, understood to be Sale Masonic Hall.

They attended and later found a suspected grenade in the same building.

The area was evacuated and a cordon was put in place to allow a bomb squad to attend.

Meanwhile, the bones were recovered in order to be 'forensically examined'.

In a statement while the incident was still ongoing, a police spokesperson said: "We were called at 11.30am today to a report of bones found at a premises on Tatton Road in Sale.

"Officers attended and later found a suspected grenade in the same premises.

"A cordon has been put in place and EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] are due to attend.

"The bones have been recovered and will be forensically examined to establish what they are.

"Road closures are currently in place and some properties have been evacuated as a precaution."
