THE consultation for the next stage in a complete overhaul of Altrincham's town centre has been extended.

People now have longer to have their say on plans to reduce vehicle access and improve cycling and walking routes through the town centre.

The plans revolve around George Street, Market Street, Groby Road, Moss Lane and Regent Road. If further funding is available, Stamford New Road and Barrington Road will also be targeted.

The plans include reducing motor traffic, widening pedestrian areas, improving cycle infrastructure and improvements to pedestrian crossings.

Consultation boards will be displayed in Altrincham Library, Pott Street, and The Contemporary Art Gallery, Stamford New Road. The consultation is also available for viewing online.

The views of residents, businesses and town centre users are being sought to help make Altrincham a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

The closing date for the consultation has now been extended to September 30.

Cllr James Wright, Trafford Council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “Altrincham has got an award-winning high street thanks to the great partnership work between the council, local businesses and developers.

“We want the town centre to continue to be a great place to live, work and visit and so it’s vital we get as many views as we can on this next important phase.”

And Cllr Michael Welton, a Green Party councillor for Altrincham, said: "We are pleased that the council has agreed to our request to extend the consultation period. It is vital that residents are given every chance to respond when important changes are proposed where they live.

"These plans would see the council investing a significant amount of money to improve the appearance of streets like George Street, Regent Road, Stamford New Road and Moss Lane. They would also make the town centre’s roads safer, and make it easier for people to access Altrincham on foot or by bike.

"To make this possible, the plans suggest some important changes to the way traffic moves around the town centre, especially on Stamford New Road and Regent Road. We hope residents will take the opportunity to comment on how these changes will affect them, and suggest any alterations or improvements."
