POLICE have confirmed the tragic death of a person at a railway station in Stretford this morning.

The emergency services were called to Humphrey Park railway station at around 9.20am to reports of someone on the tracks.

North West Ambulance Service and British Transport Police attended, but paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene.

Officers are working to identify them and inform their next of kin.

The incident is not thought to be suspicious.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "British Transport Police were called to Humphrey Park railway station this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Trains between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street were cancelled or delayed as a result of the incident.

At around 9.40am, Northern Rail tweeted: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street the line is blocked.

"Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes."

Then, at around 12.45pm, Northern Rail confirmed normal service had been resumed.
