RESIDENTS in Old Trafford have expressed shock and sorrow after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death on their doorstep.

The emergency services were called to Norton Street at around 6pm yesterday to a report of a stabbing.

They arrived to find a 16-year-old boy had been stabbed multiple times in an attack by two unknown men.

The boy was taken to hospital, but died a short time afterwards.

In a statement, Detective Superintendent Danny Inglis of GMP's Serious Crime Division described the stabbing as 'horrific'.

He said: "Our thoughts are with the victim's family at this incredibly sad time. They are being supported by our specialist officers.

"This is a horrific incident, where a young man has tragically lost his life, and we are following a number of lines of inquiry to establish exactly what has happened, and to bring those responsible to justice."

Speaking to The Messenger outside the cordon, which was still in place on Friday, residents on Norton Street and the surrounding roads were also horrified.

One, who asked to remain anonymous, said the stabbing was 'absolutely shocking'.

And another, who also asked to remain anonymous, said something like this has not happened in the area for a long time.

He said: "This **** used to happen in the early 2000s. I didn't think this **** happened anymore."

As Friday went on, people started to place flowers on Norton Street in tribute to the young life lost.

It started with a single, white rose, before people added other bouquets.

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing.
