PEOPLE can now have their say on a plan for 6,000 new homes across Trafford.

From this week residents, businesses and community groups in Trafford and across Greater Manchester are invited to comment on Places for Everyone, the city region’s long term plan for new homes, jobs and sustainable growth until 2032.

The plan has been prepared by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) on behalf of Trafford and eight other Greater Manchester boroughs after Stockport pulled out of the previous Greater Manchester Spatial Framework plans in December 2020.

Now Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan have continued together with a plan of nine – now known as Places for Everyone.

Trafford’s section of the plan, which features 6,000 homes spread across Carrington and Timperley Wedge, was approved for consultation and submission by Trafford's councillors last month.

The plan will determine the kind of development that takes place across the city region, ‘maximising the use of brownfield land and urban spaces while protecting green belt land from the risk of unplanned development’.

The proposals are also set to ensure all new developments are sustainably integrated into Greater Manchester’s transport network or supported by new infrastructure.

Now, this latest public consultation is the final stage in the plan-making process before Places for Everyone is submitted to the Secretary of State for examination.

Residents, businesses and other stakeholders are now being asked for their views on two specific issues - whether the plan is ‘sound’, and whether it is ‘legally compliant’.

It is understood that this will not entail substantial changes to the proposals themselves at this stage.

To meet national planning framework standards local authorities must show:

  • Whether the plan promotes economic growth and makes provision for development.
  • Whether it is backed up by robust evidence.
  • Whether it is based on effective and achievable policies.
  • Whether it is consistent with policies at a national level.

A public consultation on the plan will take place on gmconsult.org from Monday 9 August until Sunday 3 October.

Cllr Andrew Western, leader of Trafford Council, said: “A huge amount of work has gone into refining Places for Everyone into an exciting plan that provides for high quality and affordable housing, significant job creation and sustainable growth in Trafford over the next 20 years.”

“This consultation stage of the development plan is important because it will help to establish that Places for Everyone meets all the necessary legal requirements for it to progress. We encourage all stakeholders and interested parties to submit comments in good time before the deadline of Sunday October 3.”
