PEOPLE living in a Trafford village say passing lorries are shaking their houses to bits – and have demanded action.

Last year, residents of Carrington compared living in the village to sleeping on a motorway with the amount of vibrations they experienced in their homes due to passing HGVs.

They said they felt like their area had become the ‘forgotten village’ and was becoming an industrial backwater that the council didn’t consider as cracks began to appear in their homes’ walls and plaster fell from their ceilings.

Now, the parish council has stepped in after receiving ‘increasing concerns’ from residents complaining about the roads.

It is calling for immediate action from Trafford Council on behalf of those living in the village.

They have written to the authority, saying: “We are getting increasing concerns from residents along Manchester Road, with vibration to their property from HGV traffic at all hours of the day and night. Being kept awake, unable to sleep  and general effects on their well-being.

“Properties are being damaged with cracks appearing (plaster has fallen from the ceiling). We got a ‘fob off’ with a standard response and reference to academic journals, stating minimum affect to property from ground vibrations due to HGV traffic.

“Having read through these, I don’t think these studies had the same volume of traffic and every site is different based on road conditions, soil types etc.

“Can we ask for a number of positive actions from Trafford Council to better understand the impact on people and property.”

One lady living in the village for five years, who wished to remain anonymous, said things had become so bad for her she’d been prescribed beta blockers by her doctor to allow her to sleep and deal with her anxiety levels.

At the time, she said: “I’ve only lived there five years, if I’d have known I wouldn’t have moved in. It wasn’t as bad then as it is now. But now, all day wagons go back and to, then it starts again at 11.30pm or 1am.

“They don’t stick to 30mph speed limit, they drive far too fast and it’s constant. They’ll beep if they see their mate coming, that’s in the middle of the night. And if you do manage to drop off, by 6.30am everyone’s going to work and the road’s packed out again.

“I’ve had to put pads behind all my mirrors because the house shakes that much. I’ve not have a decent night’s sleep without taking a drug for such a long time. The house rattles, I’ve got cracks in my walls that weren’t there before. Every night I take an antihistamine and I’m on beta blockers because of the anxiety. It’s just a nightmare.”

The parish council is now calling on Trafford Council to install seismic recording devices on some properties to measure the ground vibration there, repair the road to remove broken surfaces to help negate more severe vibrations and complete a traffic survey outside of 9am to 5pm hours.

It added that they would be taking up alleged speeding by HGV drivers through the village with Greater Manchester Police.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We have been in contact with residents about their concerns. However it should be noted that expert research at a national level into damage and cracks in properties has concluded that they are unlikely to be caused by passing traffic.

“There are other factors to consider such as maintenance of a property, its foundations and construction. We will continue to monitor the road and maintain it to the required standard.”
