Our readers have had their say, as long-anticipated demolition work finally progresses at a Carlisle site, that has been considered something of an eyesore for decades.

The Dias Building on Botchergate has stood empty for more than 30 years. Formerly a musical instrument retailer, current owners Persimmon Homes confirmed plans to demolish it in February

The demolition works has required a temporary road closure of South Henry Street between April 12 and June 18, with scaffolding and hoarding erected to make the site safe and the demolition will be carried out by GM Demolition on behalf of Persimmon Homes.

After news of the work was reported, News & Star readers shared their views on the matter, with many remembering fond moments from visiting the building.

George Barnfather said: "I remember upstairs was the music store, downstairs was a clothing store . Bought a wrangler denim jacket there, and a drum skin upstairs."

William Mounsey commented: "I remember buying a new Austin Westminster from here in the sixties."

Carol Jones said: "Good memories of when it was the Shape Up gym."

Jason Graves added: "[It] was a band rehearsal room in the early 90s – [I] got my first cover band going there."

Some wanted to see it brought back to its former glory, with Shirley Johnston commenting: "I would have loved to have seen this quirky building restored to its original state."

But many were pleased with the news.

Shirley Wood said: "At long last, and the whole lot needs knocking down."

Tracy Graham said: "[It] won’t take much demolishing."

Charlotte Foster added: "[It's been an] eye sore for years."
