BOLTON trade unionists will join a global minute’s silence next week to commemorate those that have been killed or suffered life-changing injuries at work - and vow to ‘remember the dead but fight for the living’.
The commemoration will take place in Bolton town centre on April 28 where trade unionists from the TUC, UNISON and GMB will be accompanied by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas and Bolton MP Yasmin Qureshi.
They will stand in a minute’s silent reflection before laying wreaths to commemorate those workers lost and injured in the last year.
Kevin Allsop, Secretary, Bolton TUC, said: “Never before has International Workers Memorial Day been so important.
“This year, the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed an occupational health crisis in workplaces across the globe. Workers have been routinely denied even basic health and safety protections. Enforcement of health and safety legislation has been a disgrace and while members of the public have been issued with fixed penalties for breaching coronavirus regulations, not a single employer has been penalised for failing to provide a Covid-safe workplace.
