THE CORONAVIRUS infection rate continues to spike upwards in all six East Lancashire boroughs, with hundreds of new cases reported over the last seven days.

The highest number of new cases came from Blackburn with Darwen, 1134, which now has an infection rate of 757.5 cases per 100,000 people – up from 594.5 from the previous seven-day period.

However Burnley harbours the highest coronavirus infection rate of 1045.9 cases per 100,000 people after a further 930 were identified as having Covid-19 in the seven days to January 8.

In Pendle a new rate of 892.4 cases per 100,000 people has been recorded after 822 new cases.

Hyndburn is next on the list with a rate of 720.6 after 584 new cases were recorded.

The rural Ribble Valley recorded slightly fewer cases in the seven-day period, down from 337 to 373. The borough has an infection rate of 612.6 per 100,000 people.

Rossendale reported a large jump in new cases, up from 256 to 404 giving them a higher rate of 565.2, which is still the lowest in East Lancashire.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (January 9-12) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 225 (71%) have seen a rise in case rates, 89 (28%) have seen a fall and one is unchanged.

Barking & Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,451 new cases recorded in the seven days to January 8 – the equivalent of 1,620.9 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up slightly from 1,565.0 in the seven days to January 1.

Newham, also in London, has the second highest rate, up from 1,366.1 to 1,468.3, with 5,185 new cases.

Knowsley in Merseyside has the third highest rate, up sharply from 598.6 to 1,461.6, with 2,205 new cases.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 8; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 8; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 1; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 1.
