A driver has died after crashing into a tree before colliding with a van, police have confirmed.
Smithills Dean Road was closed off around 6pm yesterday evening with motorists warned to avoid the area as police were called to the scene of a serious collision.
Emergency services attended and found that a black car had collided with a tree before hitting a stationary white van.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smithills Dean Road remained closed until nearly 10pm.
A police investigation is now underway.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6pm yesterday police were called to reports of a collision on Smithills Dean Road in Bolton.
"Enquiries established that a black car collided with a tree before colliding with a stationary white van.
"Emergency services attended and the driver of the car was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident number 2071 of 24/11/2020.
"Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
