Police have been issuing fines to shoppers in the Trafford Centre over the weekend for refusing to wear face coverings.

People have been warned that they need to wear a face covering or receive a fine.

Currently the fine is now £200 for a first offence, reduced to £100 if paid within 14 days.

However, repeat offenders receiving fines on public transport or in an indoor setting will have their fines doubled at each offence.

The government has said that after the first offence there will be no discount, meaning a second fine will amount to £400 and a third fine will be £800, up to a maximum value of £6,400.

Fines have been issued to those who didn't have a face covering and couldn't provide a valid reason why they were not wearing one.

Five people were fined on Saturday for not wearing a face covering, and officers were out patrolling again on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police Stretford tweeted: "Five tickets issues to people inside the Trafford Centre yesterday failing to wear a mask.

"Most people complied with the new law and supported our presence.

"We will be there again today so please wear your mask and if exempt bring proof. Thanks."
