THE M66 has been closed northbound between Simister Island and junction 3 for Hollins after a crash involving a number of vehicles including one which has overturned this evening, Sunday.

Emergency services are on the scene clearing debris and a fuel spillage following the collision.

Trapped within the closure is in the process of being diverted.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The M66 in Greater Manchester is closed northbound between M60/M62 (Whitefield) and J3 (Bury) due to a collision involving multiple vehicles.

"Road users are being diverted via local routes.

"Please allow additional time for your journey and consider alternative routes at this time."

The M60 slip road to the M66 Northbound has also been closed.

A North West Motorway Police spokesman added: "Trapped traffic is now being allowed to pass the scene on the hard shoulder.

"The closure at J4 remains in place to prevent further traffic getting held up in this while clear up work is carried out."

Traffic is flowing on the southbound side of the M66 with no delays.
