WE all need a little bit of magic in our lives — and this year probably more than ever.

And now, thanks to the creative lot at the Octagon Theatre and the Guildford Shakespeare Company we can, in the form of an enchanting live production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The two theatre companies have teamed-up so people can once again enjoy a live theatre performance — this time in their own homes via Zoom.

It works brilliantly — with the audience quickly forgetting the actors are all performing in their own homes.

The Bolton News:

From the virtual 'curtain up', the production team has worked to create a theatre vibe, with those watching feeling they are in a virtual auditorium, making the experience that little bit more special.

As they take their seats in the living room, study or elsewhere in the home, they are welcomed by Puck to Guildbot, as guests to a wedding – and from that point on enjoy an hour-and-a-half or so of perfect theatre escapism that only live productions can provide.

A Midsummer Night's Dream follows four young lovers who find themselves lost in a mystical wood populated by fairies, sprites and a group of excitable amateur actors.

Under the skilful direction of Octagon’s Lotte Wakeham, the actors put on an entertaining production of this much loved comedy play filled with romance, mischief making and plenty of laughs.

The talented band of actors, who take on a number of roles, are not only concentrating on their performance but are also responsible for the scene changes — which they do seamlessly so the magic of the play is not broken.

Together they bring alive some of Shakespeare’s best loved characters, including of course Bottom! The Bolton News:

The play is family friendly, easy to follow, but more than that it has the feel good factor we all need right now.

This production is a reminder of how lucky we are to have our theatre which despite going through its most challenging time is still here for the people of Bolton, providing much needed light relief.

The play runs until Friday, October 2. For tickets click here
