TWO areas have recorded a sharp increase in coronavirus cases in the last seven days, new data reveals.

The figures, for the seven days to September 19, show both Rossendale with 114 new cases and Pendle with 139 cases have recorded spikes in infections.

In Bolton, 601 new cases were recorded in the seven days to September 19 - the equivalent of 209.0 per 100,000 people.

Bolton continues to record the highest rate in England, though it is down from 219.8 in the seven days to September 12.

Hyndburn has the second highest rate, up from 120.9 to 180.2 with 146 new cases.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Preston is in third place, where the rate has risen from with 241 new cases. Blackburn with Darwen also remains among the most infected places in the country in fifth place after recording 247 new infections. Burnley is also in the top ten having recorded 140 cases in the latest seven day period data is available for. The Ribble Valley continues to recorded the lowest rate in Lancashire, having recorded 23 new cases.
