STRETFORD and Urmston MP and Shadow Education Minister Kate Green is calling for teacher's assessed grades to be used after thousands of students across the country were upset by their A-Level results.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday morning she said that the current system was an absolute 'farce which is cruel to young people'.

She said: "We have now known for the third week we have been aware of problems because first of all we could see what happened in Scotland last week with A-Levels.

"So we (the Labour Party) would not have sat around to today (Monday) to try to sort out this fiasco.

"Last week around A-Levels we said when it became noted and became clear just the sheer scale that the problem was that the teacher assessed grades should be used. We know that it is not perfect but to allow for fair better results and enable students to move forward with their future studies or future careers.

"We called for a technical review of the GCSE results at that point there was still several days to go which the Government should have done the review and here we are with results of GCSEs just three days away and we have not made progress.

"We have more confusion with the Government having announced to appeal for A-Levels to find out that the criteria has been withdrawn again.

"Students of A -Levels and GCSEs must be wondering what on earth is the situation and are feeling worried and anxious. It is disgraceful."

Green hit back at comments saying about going off teacher's predicted grades that it 'de-values' the qualifications

She said: "There is now no perfect system I am afraid but let's not forget these young people have suffered incredible disruption to their education in the five or six months because of the COVID crisis and lockdown.

"It is really important that we go the extra mile for them and their futures.

"The Government have done that through the furlough scheme and certain business sectors but we should really put the young people first and it is vital we give these young people the best chance in life and use the teacher's assessment this year.

"Of course there is an appeal's process because sometimes the teachers get it wrong but the Government is messing up that appeals process as well.

"It took Labour to call for the charged and fees they have to pay to be waivered but we still don't know the criteria and this is becoming an absolute farce now which is cruel to young people."
