FIRE crews were called to a fire in the early hours of yesterday after a fire spread to a building.

Firefighters from Whitefield and Bury were called just before 3am to Cross Lane in Radcliffe where a fire in the back garden has spread to the property.

Watch manager Steve Wilcock said: "The fire had spread to the property, and had melted the guttering and damaged the facias and damaged the windows."

The cause of the fire is not known — but Mr Wilcock used the incident to remind people about the dangers of burning rubbish in the back garden.

Mr Wilcock said: "I want to re-emphasise to people not to burn rubbish in their back garden and to store it safely until they go to the tip.

"I don't think people realise how quickly fire can spread."

Crews were on the scene for just under an hour.
