A BURY supermarket owner has donated vital supplies to Fairfield General Hospital to help in the fight back against coronavirus.

Farooq Khalid, who owns the Bury Superstore in Hurst Street, yesterday delivered a van-load of toilet paper, bottled water, and soft drinks for the hospital's staff.

Also helping to make the donation was Bury North MP James Daly.

Mr Khalid said: "It was important for me to do something to help our NHS staff so that they can continue to effectively treat patients at Fairfield General Hospital."

The donation was welcomed by the hospital's head of estates, Steve Johnson, who said: "We are truly grateful to Farooq for his generous donation to NHS staff during this unprecedented and uncertain time."

Mr Daly also thanked Mr Khalid for supporting the borough's NHS staff, saying: "I want to personally thank Farooq for coming to the aid of our community during this time of crisis.

"I cannot thank him enough for his generous donation for the men and women at Fairfield General Hospital who are on the frontlines of this public health emergency."

Mr Daly added: "I will continue to fight for the wellbeing of Bury's community and I will work with those in the public and private sectors on ways they can contribute their services and resources to those who need them most.

"Our community is one of resilience, and together we will get through this pandemic."
