Cracks have started to form at homes in Carrington as residents say the impact of congestion and heavy traffic is getting worse.

Residents have reported seeing damage to their properties as lorries, cars and other traffic pour through the area via Manchester Road (the A6144), using it as a through route to other parts of Manchester.

Heavy traffic and a lack of railway infrastructure to the area have prompted calls for a relief road and better rail links in Carrington.

Now, the Parish Council is set to release a petition next week calling for a relief road and MPs across Trafford have joined forces calling for an old railway out to Carrington to be reopened.

With plans for major redevelopment and a huge new housing development already in motion for the area, there are concerns that the traffic levels will only get worse.

A spokesperson for Carrington Parish Council said: “The residents of Carrington are desperate for the relief road. The parish council have received complaints already from parishioners on Manchester Road of cracks appearing in their walls.

“The village will not withstand the amount of traffic that will come hand in hand with development in Carrington. A relief road needs to start up near Common Lane and come out at Carrington Spur to reduce any commercial traffic or vehicles that are from outside Partington and Carrington using the road as a through road.

“We would like to see a reduction on the traffic and maybe some restriction on the road so vehicles can no longer use the village but are forced to use the new road. The relief road needs to happen.”

The parish council hopes the petition will speed up any possible future delivery of the relief road.

Meanwhile, Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, has joined forces with other Trafford MPs and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) in a bid to get an old railway line out to Carrington reopened.

The bid is currently calling for a feasibility study by central Government into the possibility of reopening the line between Skelton Junction in Timperley and Glazebrook.

It is hoped in future this would ease congestion both on the roads and on the railway network.

In the long term, the line could link Warrington and Stockport with a possible station in Carrington.

The Skelton Junction line was closed as part of the Beeching reforms in the 1960s, but Ms Green said central Government has now promised to reverse these closures.

The TfGM bid to re-open Skelton Junction is being supported by Trafford Council, Salford Council, the MP for Altrincham and Sale West, Sir Graham Brady, and the MP for Worsley and Eccles South, Barbara Keeley.

Kate Green said: “I’m really pleased to see TfGM are considering plans that could provide much-needed improvements to connectivity between our communities.

“Although, at the moment, these are just plans to see whether it would be possible for the Skelton Junction line to re-open, and any new stations would be a long way off in the future, it’s positive that these steps are being taken.

“It would be great to get Partington and Carrington reconnected to the rail network and I hope the bid shows that this would be feasible.”
