POTHOLES in a neglected area of Bolton have become so bad the old cobbles are visible again for the first time in decades.

Wheatfield Street in particular has several potholes posing a hazard to drivers and cyclists.

Neil Burke, a local resident who drives down the street regularly, said: “It’s just dangerous. It’s like 54 AD when the Romans were here.

“I live in the area and go down that street everyday, it’s absolutely diabolical. It’s just trying to avoid them, you have to slow right down.

“I have to wind in and out. They are really close together and it’s really dangerous.

“It’s a danger to traffic and pedestrians. They’re more or less down the whole street, which is about 100m long. We have to negotiate the potholes which is bad.

“It’s diabolical. It seems to be the case with other thoroughfares in Bolton. We are one of the richest countries in the world but this looks like a third world country.”

In October it was announced that Bolton Council had began road repairs as part of a £12m programme to fix residential roads across Bolton.

In July each ward will receive £500,000 from the administration to spend on road repairs, and an additional £100,000 from the council.

Wheatfield Street is on the list of roads which is to be resurfaced as part of the scheme.

A spokesman for Bolton Council said: “This council has committed £12m to repairing and improving residential roads across the borough.

“Wheatfield Street is listed among the roads approved for resurfacing and residents can check our website for regular updates of when work is due to take place.

“The full programme of repairs will take a number of months to complete and we appreciate everyone’s patience."
