A SERIES of major road improvements are due to be carried out across Bury, Ramsbottom, Radcliffe and Prestwich.

However the resurfacing works, taking place at nine locations, are expected to result in road closures and diversions for motorists.

The works are being carried out as part of the extra £10 million announced for the borough's road network in last year’s Bury Council budget.

Cllr Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Improving our roads is a top priority for the council, which is why we’ve put an extra £20 million of investment into highways repairs in the last two budgets, taking advantage of low interest rates.

“There are 660km of road in Bury and we should receive around £6 million a year from the government to look after it rather than the £2 million we get; however, we will continue to invest in new equipment and our road network.”

Scheduled resurfacing is due to be carried out on the following streets:

• Brandlesholme Road, Bury: Work to take place from March 2 to May 28, between 9am and 3.30pm when traffic will be managed with two-way temporary traffic lights. The road will be open outside these times.

• Derby Street, Prestwich: Work to last from February 17 to February 21, taking place between 9am and 4pm when the road will be closed to traffic. The road will be open at other times.

• High Street, Walshaw: Work taking place from February 29 to March 29 at weekends only. Sections of the road will be closed to through traffic from 9am to 4pm, and open at other times.

• Eliza Street, Ramsbottom: Works will run from February 17 to February 25, and the road will be closed to through traffic between 9am and 4pm.

• Carr Street, Ramsbottom: Work is scheduled from February 24 to March 6, with sections of the road closed to through traffic between 9am and 4pm.

• Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe: Work will last from February 25 to March 17, with sections of the road closed to through traffic between 9am and 3pm.

• Countess Lane, Radcliffe: From March 17 to April 2, work will take place from 9am to 3pm during which traffic will be managed with two-way temporary traffic lights.

• Tottington Road, Bury: Work will take place from March 23 to April 22 during the hours of 9am and 3pm when the traffic will be managed with two-way temporary traffic lights.

• Bolton Road West, Ramsbottom: Works are scheduled from March 30 to April 14, under two-way temporary traffic lights between 9am and 3pm.

Bury Council has warned that the proposed dates of all of the schemes could change due to a number of factors including, but not limited to, the weather.
