PLANS to build dozens of homes on green belt land on the edge of Upton have been submitted.

Developer Wyatt Homes has applied to Dorset Council for permission to develop land off Policemans Lane for 92 flats and houses.

It said the site was a “deliverable development opportunity” for the provision of “much-needed” homes.

The site, adjacent to the A35, is allocated in the proposed Purbeck Local Plan for “up to 90 homes”.

If approved, the scheme would allow Wyatt Homes to extend its controversial Frenches Green development.

This was refused permission by Purbeck District Council in 2014 but the decision was overturned after an appeal.

It included the construction of an acoustic fence along the length of the western edge of the site where it meets the A35.

The first homes built in the development were sold in 2017.

Forty per cent of the 23 flats and 69 houses in the new development would be ‘affordable’.

Most would be either two- or three-bed.

And parking spaces for 246 cars would be provided.

“The application site presents a deliverable development opportunity for Upton to provide much-needed new homes within the Purbeck area,” a statement submitted with the application says.

“This will extend the high quality development delivered at Frenches Green and make a positive contribution to the character and form of Upton.”

It said the land was the last available adjacent to the town which falls outside the 400m exclusion zone protecting development near the protected heathlands area/

The site is allocated in the local plan for the Purbeck area which has yet to be formally adopted.

It says the land would “help meet the district’s housing needs” and could provide “up to 90 homes and community facilities”.

The application will be considered by council planning officers in the coming weeks.
