SEVEN firms in Trafford have been told they need ‘major improvements needed’ after inspectors rated them as zero for food hygiene.

Five of the businesses — John Lewis, Holland and Barrett, Yang Sing Cathay, Wokooshii and ChaoBaby — are based at the Trafford Centre.

Two other eateries with the lowest rating included: The Late Shop on Great Stone Road in Stretford and Busby Burgers on Sir Matt Busby Way in Stretford.

Meanwhile, a further 57 establishments were visited and they were warned ‘major improvement was necessary’ as they were given a one rating.

A spokesperson from Holland and Barrett said: “As a responsible retailer, the health and safety of our stores is of top priority.

“The shopping centre which this particular store is in unfortunately had a rodent problem last year which impacted this branch, alongside several other retailers’ premises within the centre.

“However, once this issue was brought to our attention, we took urgent and effective measures to resolve the situation including daily and weekly pest inspections, and this has now been resolved.

“We fully support the Food Standards Agency’s rating scheme and this is evidenced by the fact that the majority of our stores score 4 and over.

“We are confident that the store will score highly when rated in future.”

A spokesman for John Lewis said: “The safety of our customers is a priority for us and we are taking proactive steps in this area. We voluntarily closed our Place to Eat for a short time whilst we worked collaboratively with the Environmental Health Agency. We soon reopened and remain in contact with the agency. We expect to receive a re-score shortly.”

An intu Trafford Centre spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the ratings and we are working closely with the affected businesses to address the issues raised by the Food Standards Agency.

“Lots of changes have already been made to improve hygiene within these food outlets and we’re helping them implement additional measures to satisfy all the FSA’s concerns.

“We take food hygiene incredibly seriously and we’re monitoring the situation carefully to ensure the highest standards are upheld.”

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “Trafford Council’s Environmental Health team carry out food hygiene inspections of food businesses within the Borough on a regular basis, and the findings of these inspections are used to award a food hygiene rating, according to the Food Standards Agency’s Brand Standard.

"The team also investigate complaints made to the Council about food businesses, and these complaints are taken very seriously and may result in a further visit which could also affect the businesses’ food hygiene rating.

"Following routine food hygiene inspections, an issue with pest activity was discovered in a number of food businesses in the intu Trafford Centre in October of last year.

"Action was taken within the affected businesses to bring the matter under control, however the food hygiene ratings of the businesses were issued to reflect the conditions initially found.

"Officers are continuing to work with intu Trafford Centre and any affected businesses, and any business issued with a food hygiene rating of 0 or 1 will be kept under review to ensure that improvements are being progressed.”
