The Mayor of Trafford Council has offered his support and solidarity to Australia as the country battles huge out-of-control bush fires.

Cllr Rob Chilton has written a heartfelt letter to Cllr Alan Hall, the Mayor of Wellington Shire, Victoria, to praise the bravery and efforts of the public and the emergency crews.

Thousands of properties have been destroyed and 24 people have died since the fires began in the south of the country in September.

The fires have so far burned about six million hectares (60,000 sq km or 14.8 million acres) of bush, forest and parks, and there are fears the horrific situation will continue for a number of months.

Cllr Chilton, who represents St Mary’s Ward in Trafford, said in the letter: “The towns of Sale, Cheshire (within the Borough of Trafford), and Sale, Victoria, have historic connections.

“Our respective churches, Rotary Clubs, and other organisations, have corresponded and hosted each other over the years.

“The people of Trafford, and the whole of the UK, have been deeply concerned at recent events, and have been humbled not only by the stoic bravery of Australians facing these bushfires, but also by the heroism of your firefighters and voluntary services, who are the very best of humanity.

“Please be assured of our continuing thoughts and good wishes, and prayers for a swift conclusion to this crisis.”

The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the damage bill had reached A$700m (£370m; $485m), but said it expected the cost to rise.
