People could have more of a say on development plans in Flixton if they opt to create a community forum.

The area has a lot of greenbelt land that community groups have been fighting to protect for years.

Now, Trafford Council is consulting the public on proposals to establish a neighbourhood forum in Flixton to allow its residents more influence over any future development plans.

In areas that don’t have a town or parish council, like Flixton, residents can create a forum to have more say on any potential development there.

Plans to build new homes in the area have been heavily criticised in the past due to the level of greenbelt land in Flixton which thousands of people want to protect.

Earlier this year, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham announced the abandonment of plans to build hundreds of homes on the greenbelt there – something the 5,000-strong local community group Save Flixton Green Belt hailed as a victory.

The original plans would have seen William Wroe Golf Club bulldozed, but Mr Burnham’s revised plans saw the area scrapped from the city-region’s development plans.

For two years previously, Save Flixton Green Belt had lobbied the then Conservative-led Trafford Council to abandon plans for 750 homes in the area.

The group said it was then working with the council to form “a robust legal covenant protecting it from future threats”.

Now, residents’ group My Flixton Neighbourhood Planning Group has submitted an application to the council for permission to establish a neighbourhood forum which would give people living there greater oversight on any new homes built.

In response to the application, the council has launched its consultation to ask the public for their views on the proposed forum and the area it would cover – people have until 5pm on Friday January 31 2020 to respond.

Feedback and response forms can be completed online on the authority’s consultation page at www.trafford.gov.uk/local-plan-consultations.

The documents can also be viewed during opening hours at Trafford Town Hall, Sale Waterside Offices, Woodsend Library and Urmston Library.

The council said: “Where possible, comments should be submitted electronically via the online survey found on the consultation page or via email.”

Emails should be sent to localplan.consultation@trafford.gov.uk.

Where this is not possible, comments can be posted to Strategic Planning, Trafford Town Hall, Talbot Road, Manchester, M32 0TH.

The consultation is open from Friday 20 December 2019 until 5pm on Friday January 31 2020.

If you have any enquiries regarding the consultation, please email localplan.consultation@trafford.gov.uk or call 0161 912 3149 and a member of the council’s Strategic Planning Team will be able to assist.
