A multi-million pound scheme is supporting new walking and cycling routes in Trafford.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has pledged £160 million to the entire city-region, some of which has been handed to Trafford Council, to improve routes through the area.

One new scheme in Urmston is being supported by the funding, known as Urmston Active Neighbourhood, which will stretch across Flixton, Davyhulme East and Davyhulme West.

Plans for the scheme are still being finalised by Trafford Council, but it has said concepts “may include” improvements on upgraded crossings, new signs and new walking and cycling networks across the area.

Chris Boardman, Greater Manchester’s cycling and walking commissioner wants to connect every neighbourhood and community across the region, by making it easier for people to get around on foot or by bike.

Trafford Council said Urmston Active Neighbourhood supports this ambition.

It said the proposal is part of The Bee Network’s hope of creating the UK’s largest joined-up cycling and walking network, 1,800 miles long.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, allocated the £160 million to the Mayor’s Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund which will be used across Greater Manchester in support of this ambition.

Chris Boardman said: “We are working very closely with local authorities to identify key routes, and develop new schemes.

“The scheme in Trafford will deliver huge benefits – making walking and cycling a real choice for local people and improving people’s health by helping to tackle congestion and poor air quality.”
