A DISGRUNTLED former resident of the Salvation Army hostel in Blackburn returned and threw three bricks though the front window.

Blackburn magistrates heard when police arrived Carl Richard Lewis held a broken bottle to his neck and threatened to kill himself.

But he dropped the “weapon” when officers armed with tasers arrived on the scene.

Lewis, 33, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to damaging a £400 window and possessing an offensive weapon. He was jailed for 12 weeks and ordered to pay £122 victim surcharge.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said Lewis had been thrown out of the Heaton Street hostel after assaulting a worker. He returned two days later, on Sunday, but was turned away. Shortly after a member of staff was sitting in the office when he heard three separate smashing sounds.

“When he went to investigate there were three bricks inside the property near to a broken window,” said Mrs Yates.

“He fully admitted the offences when he was interviewed and said he threw the bricks hoping they would injure or kill members of staff inside.”

Waseem Choudhary, defending, said his client had mental health issues.

“He says if he is released he will probably go and commit the same offences again,” said Mr Choudhary. “He has also told his probation officer if he is released he will kill himself.”
