PRIMARY schools in Trafford continue to be among the best in the country, the Department for Education annual school performance tables show.

The tables rank every school based on the results of the Key Stage Two SATs —taken by Year Six pupils to test their reading, writing and maths.

Trafford's overall result left the rest of the country standing, smashing the national average by more than 10 percentage points — with children making above average progress when compared to their peers who were at similar starting points.

This year, 77 per cent of children left primary school having achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, beating the 65 per cent national average.

And the progress children make during their time at school in all subjects is above average. This score shows how much progress pupils make at school in reading, writing and maths between the end of Key Stage One and the end of Key Stage Two, compared to pupils who got across England who got similar results at the end of Key Stage One.

And the number of children achieving at a higher standard — putting them in the top five per cent of pupils nationally — was well above national average of 11 per cent, standing at 18 per cent.

Results for each individual subject were well above the national average. In reading 83 per cent of children reached at least the expected standard compared to 73 per cent nationally, for maths the figure stood at 87 per cent compared to the national average of 79 per cent and for writing the score was 86 per cent and 78 per cent respectively.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We are very proud to be yet again celebrating the achievements of our schools in Trafford. A big thank you must go out to all our teachers, parents and children for all their hard work.”

Top of the table, according to Department for Education rankings, was St Joseph's Catholic Primary School with 95 per cent of children meeting the standards expected — with all the top four being Sale schools.

In a statement the senior leadership team at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School said: "We are delighted that our high levels of attainment place us so highly on the Trafford league tables this year. Our results reflect the hard-work, dedication and commitment of all our pupils and staff team, and is testimony to the strong links we have with our families and the parish. Our aim is to inspire and nurture our pupils so they are able to achieve to their full potential in all aspects of their educational journey.”

Children made well above average progress in every subject at Seymour Primary School in Old Trafford, it was the only school to post such a result.

Well Green Primary School in Altrincham was number one for the percentage of children achieving the higher standard, which was 34 per cent.
